Green Lake General Information
Green Lake (1,714 acres) in Chisago County is the largest lake in the Chisago Chain of Lakes. It is characterized by three distinct basins: the north end which is commonly called Little Green, the centrally located main basin, and the southern end which encompasses many shallow bays. The Department of Natural Resources, Section of Fisheries manages the lake as one body of water. Minnesota lakes managed for fishing are grouped into classes based on physical, chemical and biological similarities. Green Lake is assigned to lake class 24.
In Green Lake, green and blue-green algae flourish well in the summer time, which is typically the growing season for most plants. During very warm temperatures, the lake may take on a green color due to algae blooms causing clarity readings to average around 4.2 feet from the surface. Development is substantial on the lake, with 335 residences counted during the survey of 2006.
